One dead as Arab-driven truck runs into cars in Tel Aviv

One person was killed, and several pedestrians, bus passengers and motorists were injured as a truck driven by an Israeli Arab hit several cars and a bus in the Israeli seashore city of Tel Aviv Sunday morning.

Police are questioning the driver, who was apprehended shortly after fleeing the scene of the incident. Eyewitnesses said he descended from the vehicle and was shouting before running away from the scene.

"A truck driven by an Israeli Arab drove into a number of vehicles and then hit a bus, as a result one was killed and four to five were injured who are being treated at the scene," Israel Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld told Xinhua.

A passerby told Army radio that the truck repeatedly slammed into a bus, and then crashed into other vehicles.

"He kept ramming into the bus," the individual said, stressing that it did not appear to be an accidental loss of control of the vehicle. The individual said the event transpired along close to a kilometer of the busy road.

A first-responder said there appeared to be 10 to 15 people injured in the event.

Local police has suspected that it may have been a terror attack by the 22-year-old Israeli Arab truck driver to mark "Nakba Day," an annual commemoration of the disaster Palestinians suffered during the Arab-Israeli war in 1948.

Israeli police and army has raised the alert on Sunday, as close to 10,000 Police and other security forces are deployed throughout the country, particularly in mixed Jewish-Arab areas to quell possible disturbances. Police were instructed to refrain from using live fire, unless there was an actual threat to life.

Palestinian stone throwers clashed with Israel Border Police in several Arab neighborhoods in eastern Jerusalem Sunday morning.

The Israeli army closed crossing points between Israel and the West Bank early Sunday, according to an Israel Defense Forces statement sent to Xinhua.

There have been a number of vehicular attacks against Israelis in recent years, including three incidents in Jerusalem in which bulldozer operators used their vehicles to hit pedestrians and vehicles.
