Phenol spill polluted river in eastern China


 
Oil tanker traffic along the road rolled into China, in eastern Zhejiang Province on Saturday night River of toxic chemicals phenol, local authorities said on Sunday. 

Chemical spills from oil tankers, and washed by rain into the Xin'anjiang about 11 pm Saturday, said the publicity office of Jiande City, the spokesman for the accident. 

Xin River, Fuchun River and Qiantang River into the feed, the drinking water of several cities in Zhejiang, including Hangzhou, the capital of water. 

Local environmental protection departments are working to curb pollution, the spokesman added. 

Phenol and its vapor corrosive to the eyes, skin and respiratory system. The substance in contact with skin may cause burns. It can also damage the central nervous system, heart, lung and kidney.
