Chinese mainland TV manufacturers expected to buy flatscreens worth 5.5 bln USD from Taiwan

Television manufacturers on the Chinese mainland are expected to ink a 5.5-billion-U.S. dollar procurement agreement with flatscreen producers in Taiwan during a trip to the island next month, according to the mainland-based China Video Industry Association (CVIA).

The CVIA vice president Bai Weimin said on Thursday that the association will arrange for major mainland TV manufacturers, including Hisense, Haier, Skyworth, TCL, Changhong, Konka, Prima and Panda, to visit Taiwan on June 14.

The companies traveling to Taiwan have signed similar deals in the past, with a 4.5-billion-U.S. dollar procurement agreement signed in 2009 and another deal totaling 5.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, according to Bai.

"Although a similar production line is being set up in the mainland, these mainland manufacturers will continue to purchase large numbers of flatscreens from Taiwan over the next five years due to a shortage on the mainland," Bai said.

Demands for Taiwanese components and 3D screens will increase as the demand for high-tech televisions on the mainland continues to rise, Bai said.

Bai said the delegation will also advocate the establishment of an intelligent TV industry alliance across the Taiwan Strait. This alliance will enhance cooperation, improve competitiveness and increase global market shares for TV manufacturers on both sides of the strait, Bai said.

The Chinese mainland is the world's largest producer and consumer of television sets.
