- Iran hanged four drug traffickers in the central city of Kerman

 Iran hanged four drug traffickers within the central city of Kerman, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported Wednesday.

The unidentified drug traffickers were charged with armed smuggling of and keeping various kinds of narcotic, stated the report.

The committed people had been hanged in the central prison of Kerman, said Mehr with out specifying the time of execution.

On Tuesday, the local English language Iran Daily reported that 300 drug traffickers are on death row in Iran.

Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi said Sunday "300 individuals have been sentenced to death in relation to drug smuggling, " said Iran Every day.

Drug abuse remains a main concern among Iranian public opinion, Jafari-Dolatabadi stated, adding that curbing the distribution and transport of illegal drugs is one of the principal approaches in fighting drug trafficking.

Iran is located at the crossroad of international drug smuggling from Afghanistan, the world's top opium producer, to Europe.

Drug trafficking, together with some other crimes such as murder, adultery, rape and armed robbery, is subject to death penalty in Iran.
