6.3 earthquake occurred in Sumatra, Indonesia

A shallow undersea quake measuring at six.3 Richter scale struck off Sumatra island earlier Monday, however it was not prospective for tsunami and caused no harm, officials said here on Monday.

The quake struck at 01:23 a.m. Jakarta time Monday (1824 GMT Sunday) with epicenter 409 km southwest Bintuhan of Benglulu province and using the depth 10 km below sea bed, an official from the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency Andri Sembiring told Xinhua by phone.

The intensity from the quake was felt at 2 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity), he mentioned.

A local official of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency Yudi Lesmana told Xinhua by mobile phone that there was no immediate reports of harm or fatality. The USGS reported that the quake was at five.9 magnitude. Indonesia sits on a quake-prone zone so named the Papcific Ring of Fire.
