Salmonella food-borne disease remains the biggest threat to Americans

Salmonella, E. coli, poses the greatest threat to the health of Americans, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Tuesday.

Salmonella infection has increased by ten percent the past 15 years, and several types of foodborne disease have been declining, the agency said in a report.

Shiga toxin from Escherichia coli 0157 (most in the United States concerned about the strain) infection has dropped nearly half and six other food-borne infection rates have been cut twenty-three%, CDC said.

The agency issued a new strain of deadly E. coli is spread in several European countries reported.

"There are about 50 million people, who became the United States each year from food illness. This is about one of the six Americans," CDC Director Dr Thomas R Frieden said.

The CDC attributed to the reduction of infection from E. coli 0157 in order to better detection and outbreak investigation, clean method of slaughtering, and better detection of E. coli beef, ground beef processing plants to improve checks against E. coli O157 in ground beef and regulations beef, the importance of proper cooking increased awareness.

Reduced the incidence of other, and in the same period of foodborne diseases include Campylobacter, Listeria, Vibrio, and Yersinia caused by pathogens.

The agency also urged the public to thoroughly cook meat, poultry, eggs and shellfish, and from the consumption of unpasteurized milk, juice or soft cheese to avoid.
