China's strategic intention is to pursue peaceful development: Chinese Ambassador to Australia

China's strategic intention is nothing but peaceful development, Chinese Ambassador to Australia Chen Yuming said on Friday during a speech delivered in an Australian university.
Invited by Australia's National Security Institute of the University of Canberra, Chen delivered a speech entitled "For Peaceful Development and Win-Win Progress".
Chen said China is firmly committed to the path of peaceful development and unswervingly pursues the win-win strategy of opening up, adding that the purpose of China's national defense is to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity, protect its over 22,000-km land border and 18,000-km maritime border, and secure a peaceful environment for development.
He said China's development is achieved by promoting economic and social progress at home rather than seeking military expansion overseas.
"China's strategic intention is nothing but peaceful development,"Chen said in Australia's University of Canberra on Friday.
"To live and work in happiness and share prosperity with other nations is the hope of the one fifth of the world population,"he said.
"Chinese people will fulfill their dream in peaceful means through hard work, reform and innovation and by engaging in mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries,"he added.
Chen also said that the central to the century-old Chinese culture is the value of keeping good faith, building amicable ties, and cherishing peace above everything else.
Meanwhile, Chen gave positive assessment of the China-Australia 's relations, saying that the continued exchange of high-level visits between the two countries has played an important role in deepening the comprehensive and cooperative relations.
"China wishes to see its peaceful development bring more opportunities to Australia, and stands ready to work with the Australian side to create an even brighter future for bilateral relations,"he said.
He said that there have been frequent military visits and personnel exchanges between the two countries' military and defense department, and that military cooperation with Australia was aimed at building better trust between the two countries.
The comment came after Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Jia Qinglin's official visit to Australia in April this year. Julia Gillard has also made her first visit to China as Australian prime minister, where she flagged closer military ties with China.
