Insecurity in DR Congo forces NGOs to suspend some activities

Some humanitarian actors have temporarily suspended their activities in South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA) said on Thursday that this suspension was caused by repeated attacks against the vehicles of humanitarian organizations in the province.
In a press statement, OCHA disclosed that a vehicle belonging to an NGO, Hope in Action, was attacked on May 20 in South Kivu by 15 suspected members of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), who fled with money and other valuables.
Elsewhere, three trucks of another NGO calling itself Hope Action were ambushed on the nights of May 19 and May 23. Other private and commercial vehicles were also attacked during that period.
The attacks tend to be on the rise in absence of national army officers who are rarely at the stations since deployed.
