Medvedev OKs US-Russian plutonium disposal

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev approved the disposal of surplus weapons-grade plutonium Russian-US agreement, Kremlin press service said on Tuesday.

According to local media reports, Russia intends to take the plan, which is as a new Russian-US Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), a slash to 1,550 strategic warheads each arsenals continue to appear 350 million U.S. dollars.

The report also said the U.S. government will invest about 400 billion U.S. dollars on the program.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed in April 2010 to eliminate surplus weapons-grade plutonium to reach a final agreement of defense programs.

Under the agreement, both parties will each dispose of excess plutonium 34, which is enough to create thousands of tons of nuclear weapons. The program was launched 2018.

Through this agreement by the Russian State Duma, or lower the Capitol, May 20, by the Russian Federation Council upper house, insist on 25 May 2011.
