James Arness, star of "Gunsmoke" left us

James Arness,a television icon who played the title role in long-running classic Western series " Gunsmoke," died Friday in Brentwood, Southern California. He was 88.

The actor died of natural causes at his home, family spokesperson Ginny Fazer was quoted by the Los Angeles Times as saying.

Arness left a farewell message to his fans on his website, "in the event I was no longer here."

"I wanted to take this time to thank all of you for the many years of being a fan of `Gunsmoke,' 'The Thing,' 'How the West Was Won' and all the other fun projects I was lucky enough to have been allowed to be a part of," he wrote. "I had the privilege of working with so many great actors over the years."

A World War II veteran from Minnesota who received a Purple Heart, Arness launched his acting career in the 1947 film "The Farmer's Daughter" opposite Loretta Young. He also co-starred in John Wayne movies including "Island in the Sky," "Hondo" and "Big Jim McLain."

At the recommendation of John Wayne, the towering actor landed a role as Marshal Matt Dillion, symbol of frontier justice who watched over the town of Dodge City and kept it clear of bad guys, in "Gunsmoke" which made him an instant sensation and one of the television's most enduring stars. The series, debuted on CBS on Sept.10, 1955, ended its run in 1975, making it one of the longest- running series in history.

Arness also reprised the iconic role in five made-for- television movies during the 1987-94 period.

According to his website, the actor is survived by his wife, Janet; two sons and six grandchildren.

"Dr. Death" Jack Kevorkian dies

 Jack Kevorkian, a former Oakland County pathologist who was known as "Dr Death" for having helped more than 130 people end their lives, died on Friday morning in Royal Park, Michigan, at the age of 83, according to a report of Detnews.

Kevorkian, who had previously been diagnosed with liver cancer, had been hospitalized with kidney and respiratory problems for several weeks at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, according to his longtime attorney Geoffrey Fieger.

Fieger said at a press conference that he believes that if Kevorkian hadn't been so weak and infirmed that he might have made choice to end his life the way he helped others do so.

Kevorkian has been focused on death and dying long before he stirred a still-unsettled debate in U.S. over assisted suicide by helping sick and suffering people to end their lives with the help of a machine he devised that allowed the patient themselves to trigger an injection of a lethal drug.

Fieger described him as "a rare human being who can single- handedly take on an entire society by the scruff of its neck and force it to focus on the suffering of other human beings."

His admirers lauded him as a hero who allowed the terminally ill to die with dignity, while his critics described him as a cold- blood killer.

Kevorkian was charged with first-degree murder after he launched an assisted suicide campaign in 1990 by allowing Alzheimer's patient to kill themselves, but the charges were later dismissed.

He was finally convicted of murder in the second-degree in 1999 after being declared not guilty four times in Michigan, and was released in 2007 under a condition that he promised no longer assist in any more suicides.

After his release from prison, the doctor remained in the spotlight by giving occasional lectures and running unsuccessfully for the U.S. Congress in 2008. An HBO documentary on his life and a movie, "You Don't Know Jack", starring Al Pacino, brought him back into the limelight last year.

Doctor-assisted suicide essentially became law in Oregon in 1997 and in Washington state in 2009. The practice of doctors writing prescriptions to help terminally ill patients kill themselves was ultimately upheld as legal by the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Our purchase of almost 13 billion U.S. dollars of Walmart stock since last June is indicative of our strong free cash flow position," said Charles Holley, Walmart executive vice president and chief financial officer. "We are pleased to continue our share repurchase program with this new 15 billion U.S. dollars authorization."

In addition to share repurchase, the company continues to return value to shareholders through dividends. Walmart increased the current fiscal year dividend per share by approximately 21 percent to 1.46 U.S. dollars, from 1.21 U.S. dollars in fiscal 2011. The researchers found that mutations to promote hair growth

 A team of U.S. and Chinese researchers have discovered a chromosomal mutation responsible for a very rare condition in which people grow excess hair all over their bodies.

The finding ultimately will lead to new treatments for this and less severe forms of excessive hair growth as well as baldness, said researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC).

The researchers made the discovery in cooperation with their counterparts at Peking Union Medical College. Study findings were published in the June issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics.

The initial discovery of the mutation came from a lab at the Peking Union Medical College, which examined the condition, known congenital hypertrichosis syndrome (CGH), in a Chinese family. Males with this disorder have hair covering their entire face including their eyelids and their upper body, while females have thick patches of hair on their bodies.

Then researchers confirmed the finding in a Mexican family that Pragna Patel, professor in the Keck School, the USC Institute for Genetic Medicine, and the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC, first began studying in 1993.

"In 1995, we traced the approximate location of the mutation responsible for CGH to a section of the X chromosome in the Mexican family," said Patel.

"We sequenced nearly 100 genes but could not find any mutations. Then recently, Xue Zhang and his colleagues in Beijing were able to pinpoint the exact location, discovering that there was an insertion of chromosome 5 into the X chromosome in the Chinese family," Patel said.

"When the Mexican family was examined, a piece of chromosome 4 was found to be inserted into the same part of the X chromosome, thus confirming that these extremely rare events caused the disorder."

The investigators suggest that insertion of the "extra" DNA sequences into the X chromosome apparently turns on a gene, likely SOX3, located near the insertion site. SOX3 is a strong candidate because other members of this gene family have been shown to play a role in hair growth.

In addition, the insertion has occurred within a block of DNA sequence called a "palindrome," in which the sequence of the four building blocks of DNA (akin to letters of the alphabet) read exactly the same as their complementary sequences, but in the reverse direction. The particular palindrome at the site that the researchers studied is only found in humans.

"We don't yet know the significance of the palindromic sequence in this case," Patel said. "But it appears to be unstable, and can be entirely absent in many individuals with normal hair growth. It 's only when there is insertion of certain chromosome segments at this site that people have extra hair."

Earlier, researchers had theorized that the CGH mutation is " atavistic" -- a trait that reappears after being absent for a long time. One example of an atavistic trait is extra nipples in both men and women.

"It's like the information is there in the genome, but is silenced," Patel said. "Then somehow it's reactivated, and can manifest as the trait. We don't know yet if this is the case with CGH."

Further studies will test if this is indeed true. "If in fact the inserted sequences turn on a gene that can trigger hair growth, it may hold promise for treating baldness or hirsutism (excessive hair growth) in the future, especially if we could engineer ways to achieve this with drugs or other means," Patel said.

Eating earth may protect the stomach against toxins, parasites and pathogens, a new study suggests.

To examine the possible benefits from eating earth, researchers at Cornell University analyzed reports from missionaries, plantation doctors, explorers, and anthropologists to put together a database of more than 480 cultural accounts of geophagy -- the eating of earth.

The database includes as many details as possible about the circumstances under which earth was consumed, and by whom. The researchers could then use patterns in the data to evaluate each potential explanation.

Studies in the database indicate that geophagy is common even when food is plentiful. Moreover, when people eat dirt they tend to eat only small quantities that are unlikely to fill an empty stomach.

The database shows that geophagy is documented most commonly in women in the early stages of pregnancy and in pre-adolescent children. Both categories of people are especially sensitive to parasites and pathogens, according to the researchers.

In addition, geophagy is most common in tropical climates where foodborne microbes are abundant. Finally, the database shows that people often eat earth during episodes of gastrointestinal stress.

It's unlikely the intestinal problems are caused by the dirt itself because the type of clay people usually eat comes from deep in the ground, where pathogens and parasites are unlikely to contaminate it. Plus, people usually boil the clay before eating it.

More study would be helpful to confirm the protection hypothesis, the researchers say, but the available data at this point clearly support it over the other explanations for eating earth.

"We hope this paper stimulates (more) research," said Sera Young, a researcher at Cornell University and the study's lead author. "More importantly, we hope readers agree that it is time to stop regarding geophagy as a bizarre, non-adaptive gustatory mistake."

"With these data, it is clear that geophagy is a widespread behavior in humans ...that occurs during both vulnerable life stages and when facing ecological conditions that require protection."

The study is appearing in the June issue of The Quarterly Review of Biology.

Locke highlighted two proposed approaches for reforming the current visa system: encouraging top foreign talents who receive a graduate degree in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to remain in the U.S. after they graduate by allowing them to acquire legal permanent residence; and issuing two-year visas to immigrant entrepreneurs whose start-up companies receive investment from a U.S. investor, and giving these entrepreneurs permanent residence if their companies create full- time jobs in the U.S. within those two years.

Duncan emphasized the importance of opening the doors of America's top-notch higher education to more immigrants. He specifically underscored the DREAM Act, a measure to give tens of thousands of young illegal immigrants a path to legal status, as an important part of the administration's comprehensive immigration reform agenda.

Obama had vowed to reform the country's immigration system during his presidential campaign in 2008, which helped him win critical support from an important and still growing constituency - - Hispanic voters. But more than two years passed, those voters did not see what the president had promised them, and are getting impatient and dissatisfied with the administration.

Given an emboldened Republican Party in Congress after the midterm elections, comprehensive immigration reform is almost impossible in the near future.

A homemade Danish space rocket, said to be the world's largest amateur vehicle, was launched successfully from Danish territory Friday.

The unmanned Heat 1X Tycho Brahe rocket took off from a homemade floating launchpad in the Baltic Sea, off the east coast of the Danish island of Bornholm, at 16:32 p.m local time.

The orange-and-white rocket blasted into the clear-blue spring sky before a section containing its electronic systems parachuted back to sea.

"I think we have written a small piece of history ... we have worked for three years on this," Kristian von Bengtson, one of the rocket's designers, told Danish broadcaster TV2 after the launch.

The rocket which aimed to reach a height of 15 or 16 kilometers actually flew a height of 2.8 kilometers.

"It rose a few kilometers and we heard the sound wall (sonic- boom) ... Now we are collecting sufficient data to build a better one next time," said Peter Madsen, the rocket's other designer.

"It was a fantastic flight and we have become smarter about how one launches a rocket into space ... The fact we could sea- launch a rocket was proved by us today," he told TV2.

The designers say the rocket is 500 times bigger than what amateurs normally build, and cost just 60,000 U.S. dollars to develop.

Named after a 16th-century Danish astronomer, the Heat 1X Tycho Brahe is 9.5 meters long, weighs around 1,500 kilograms, and packs 165,000 horsepower.

Mostly built of steel, the rocket is wrapped in cork which acts as a heat shield. It is not designed to be steered. It can be constructed with materials and tools available from most hardware stores, its designers say.

Friday's launch aimed to prove that such a launch could be achieved without financial backing from a major private or public organization, the designers added.

Their company, Copenhagen Suborbitals, which calls itself an open-source, non-profit organization, ultimately aims to achieve manned spaceflight using micro-size spacecraft.

The launch, which was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, was delayed as the rocket experienced niggling problems with its auto-launch sequence.

An earlier launch attempt in September 2010 failed owing to a faulty liquid oxygen valve.

7 killed in U.S. drone strike in northwest Pakistan
