1 killed, 2 seriously injured in Thailand's southern insurgency

One person was killed and two others were seriously injured in a Friday-night attack in Saiburi district of southernmost Narathiwat province in Thailand, police said on Saturday.
The police said that unknown number of gunmen on motorcycles opened fire with AK-47 assault rifle on a six-wheel truck which was running on Pattani-Narathiwat road.
Then the assailants set fire to the truck making the truck driver dead instantly at the scene and two others seriously wounded.
The suspects were able to flee the scene immediately. The police blamed separatist insurgents for the incident.
Over the past seven years since the violence renewed in the Muslim-dominant region in 2004, almost 10,000 insurgent attacks have taken place in the southernmost provinces -- Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. More than 4,400 people have been killed but no credible group has claimed responsibility for the violence.
