Sri Lankan local elections to be held in July

Elections for some 95 local councils will be held before the end of third week in July, election monitoring group said here Saturday.
Elections for these councils were not held in March along with rest of the councils due to the cricket world cup held here. Court proceedings blocked elections for some of the councils as political parties petitioned court when their candidate applications were rejected by election officials on technical grounds.
"Our talks with the elections department have indicated that elections will be held by the third week of July", said Rohana Hettiarachchi, the chief of PAFFREL (People's Action for Free and Fair Elections).
The ruling United People's Freedom Alliance won a majority of councils in the elections held on March 17.
Among the elections left to be held are the councils for the main cities like Colombo, Kandy and Galle.
