Moderate earthquake jolts central Philippines

 A magnitude-5.0 earthquake rocked the central Philippine region of Visayas late Sunday afternoon, Philippine seismologists said. No harm has been reported nevertheless.

The quake struck at five:15 p.m. at a depth of 12 kilometers and 36 kilometers southwest of Iloilo City, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stated in its on line bulletin. The quake was tectonic in origin, the institute stated, warning of possible aftershocks.

In accordance with the United states Geological Survey (USGS), the quake had a magnitude of four.7 along with a depth of 52.five kilometers.

The Philippines sits inside the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an region where continental plates collide, producing frequent quakes and volcanic activities.
